Introduction of Plano-Convex Lenses

As the most common lens element, a plano-convex lens is a convergent lens with a flat surface and a convex surface that focuses and collimates light. More specifically, both surfaces of a plano-convex lens work together by focusing parallel rays to a positive focus. In this way, the plano-convex lens constitutes a real image that can be easily manipulated by using spatial filters.

The curve surface of a plano-convex lens has a focusing effect on light, while the plane has no focusing or defocusing effect. The asymmetry of plano-convex lenses can reduce spherical aberrations in applications where the distance between the image and the object and the lens is not equal. Generally, a parallel light beam (or a distant light source) is incident from a convex surface to minimize the occurrence of spherical aberration, and the light beam emitted from the plane side is collected. Plano-convex lenses are used to apply focus to the optical system and collimate the divergent light beam. When the curve part of the lens faces the object, the maximum clear focus can be achieved. Plano-convex lenses have both a positive focal length and a direction that play a key role in determining image quality.

For systems with less stringent image quality requirements, plano-convex lenses can be used as simple imaging lenses. For higher quality images, we recommend using an achromatic lens. Plano-convex lenses are ideal for focusing applications with light collimation or monochromatic illumination, such as telescopes, microscopes, collimators, optical transceivers, magnifiers, condenser systems, and eyepieces. And suitable for industrial, pharmaceutical, robotics or defense and other collimation or monochrome processing applications.

Plano-Convex Lenses

Plano-convex lenses are ideal for focusing parallel light rays into a single point, and these lenses can be used in a variety of applications. They have proven focal lengths, and they have near-optimal profiles for infinity and infinity conjugate applications. Plano-convex lenses can focus a collimated beam at the back focus, or turn a point light source into a collimated beam. The plano-convex lenses produced by Gore are usually made of K9 glass, and their AR coatings are targeted for the wavelength range of 400-700 nm. There are also UV quartz as the base material for processing. When UV quartz is used as the base material, it has good transmittance and low expansion coefficient in the ultraviolet region, and can be plated with UV AR film for use in special circumstances.
